OUR STORY

From an empty horse paddock to a small, rustic village of creativity, ideas & possibilities. The In8 DESiGN HUB has been spoken into being, built by hand & brought to life with the help of many people.

1887 — WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Our section was first surveyed in 1887, when pioneers established the township of Elbow, later renamed Lumsden.

FROM A HORSE PADDOCK TO A DESiGN HUB

It began with long grass, run-down fences & an ancient grain-crushing machine. Nothing more.

Locals & friends kept asking Stevey what was happening on the land. Through those conversations, a vision began to emerge:

“We are here to DESiGN & create great ideas. A place without pressure from the outside world, where people can think, rest & tinker. A place to develop the future of the planet — another piece of heaven on earth.”

BUILT BY HAND, WITH PURPOSE

• November 2013: Our first building was established — now home to Lumsden BiKE HiRE.
• The WorkShop: A strong, rustic structure built from large timber beams, power poles, Queenstown Airport windows & repurposed Southland and Central Otago materials.
• Our little village: A collection of small, individual buildings followed — including unique spaces where guests can now stay.

Each building was generally framed & closed in within a week, then slowly finished with care, creativity & personality.

Every space has its own story, combining:

• Repurposed building materials & upcycled furniture
• Double glazing & generous insulation
• Eclectic paintings, colourful bedding & creative finishes
• Warmth, comfort, individuality & vibrant character
• Construction guided by NZ building standards

The result is a cosy, welcoming collection of spaces, each with its own feeling, personality & charm.

The In8 DESiGN HUB is a space for free expression, fresh thinking & reviving the spirit. A place where people are encouraged to ask big questions, imagine possibilities & create what matters.
